• Band and loop: a metal band fits on a nearby tooth with a wire loop that holds the space.
• Lingual arch: a wire across the back of the lower teeth that keeps the space open on both sides.
• Other designs: your dentist will recommend the type that fits your child's mouth.

The Space Maintainer Process Step by Step

• Exam: we examine your child's teeth and check how the permanent teeth are developing.
• Impressions or scans: we record the shape of your child's mouth so the appliance fits well.
• Fitting: the space maintainer is placed and checked for comfort.
• Follow-up: we monitor your child's teeth until the permanent tooth comes in, and then remove the appliance.

Caring for a Space Maintainer

Your child should avoid sticky foods, hard candy, gum and ice, which can loosen the appliance. Brush carefully around it and clean the area well. Do not let your child push or pull on it with fingers or tongue. If it becomes loose or bent, call us right away.

Preventing Early Tooth Loss

The best protection is prevention. Fluoride treatment, sealants and regular checkups help keep baby teeth healthy until they fall out naturally.

When Space Maintainers Are Not Needed

Not every lost baby tooth needs a space maintainer. If the permanent tooth is about to come in, the gap may close on its own. We examine each case and recommend a space maintainer only when it will help.

Why Timing Matters

The space around a lost baby tooth can begin to close within weeks to months, so it is best to see us soon after the tooth is lost. If you know a baby tooth needs to be removed, ask about a space maintainer ahead of time so it can be planned.

What Happens When the Permanent Tooth Comes In?

We watch your child's teeth with regular visits and, when the permanent tooth is ready to erupt, we remove the appliance. Sometimes X-rays are used to check that the tooth is coming in properly. If crowding is already present, we may talk about orthodontic options later on.

Talking to Your Child About the Appliance

Explain that the appliance is a little helper that saves a place for the new tooth. Encourage your child to avoid pushing on it and to tell you if it feels loose. Most children adjust quickly and soon forget it is there.

Signs Your Child May Need One

Call us if your child has lost a baby tooth much earlier than expected, if a tooth had to be removed because of decay or injury, or if you see neighbouring teeth beginning to lean toward a gap. The sooner we look, the more options we have.

Bring your child in even if the gap seems small. It is much easier to protect space early than to open it back up later.

Before Your Visit

• Bring any information about the lost tooth, including when and how it happened.
• Tell us about your child's health history.
• Explain what will happen so your child feels comfortable.

After Your Treatment

• Your child may feel the appliance for a few days as they get used to it.
• Avoid sticky foods, hard candy and gum.
• Brush carefully around the appliance and keep up with regular checkups.
• Call us if the appliance feels loose or causes sore spots.
