What to Expect During the Procedure

Before your extraction, we explain each step so you know what to expect. The area around the tooth is numbed with local anesthetic so you do not feel pain during the procedure.

• Simple extraction: the tooth is gently loosened and removed with specialized instruments.
• Surgical extraction: for impacted or broken teeth, a small incision in the gum tissue lets us remove the tooth carefully.
• Sedation: patients who feel anxious can ask about sedation options to stay calm and comfortable.

We use digital X-rays and imaging to see the position and roots of the tooth before we begin. This helps us plan your extraction precisely, reduce discomfort and support a smoother recovery.

Why We Try to Save Your Tooth First

A natural tooth helps you chew, keeps your bite balanced and supports the bone in your jaw. For that reason, we look at every option before recommending removal. Sometimes a tooth that looks hopeless can be rebuilt with a filling or a crown, and sometimes the nerve can be treated so the tooth stays in place. When extraction is the best path, we explain why and make a plan for what comes next.

Replacing an Extracted Tooth

A gap left by a missing tooth can cause neighbouring teeth to drift and can make chewing harder. Depending on your situation, your dentist may discuss dental implants, a bridge from our crowns and bridges options, or partial or complete dentures. We will explain the benefits and timing of each, so you can plan the right replacement.

Before Your Visit

• Tell us about your medical history, medications and any allergies.
• Ask about sedation if you are nervous, and arrange a ride home if your dentist recommends it.
• Eat a light meal unless your dentist advises otherwise, and wear comfortable clothing.
• Bring your insurance or CDCP information so we can arrange direct billing.

After Your Treatment

• Apply gentle pressure with gauze to control bleeding.
• Use ice packs on the cheek to reduce swelling.
• Stick to soft foods for the first few days.
• Avoid smoking, using straws and vigorous rinsing for at least 24 hours to protect the blood clot in the socket.
• Follow the written aftercare instructions we provide for your procedure.
• Call us if you have swelling that worsens, fever, lasting pain or bleeding that does not stop.

We accept most insurances and offer direct billing, and our team files the paperwork for you. The Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) can help eligible patients with services such as extractions. Contact us before your visit and we will explain how your coverage may apply.
