Fluoride at Home

Professional treatment works best alongside good home care. Brush twice a day with a small amount of fluoride toothpaste, supervise young children so they do not swallow it, and limit sugary drinks. Ask us about the right amount of toothpaste for your child's age.

Fluoride and Other Preventive Care

Fluoride works well with dental sealants, which protect the grooves of back teeth, and with regular checkups and cleanings. Together, they give your child's teeth strong, layered protection.

Is Fluoride Safe?

How Often Is Fluoride Applied?

Many children have fluoride applied at regular checkups, and your dentist will suggest how often based on your child's risk of cavities. Children with more risk factors may benefit from more frequent applications, while children with very low risk may need them less often.

Talking to Your Child About the Visit

Tell your child that the dentist will paint something on their teeth to keep them strong. Avoid words such as hurt or pain. Our team is used to working with children and will explain each step as we go, which helps even nervous kids feel comfortable.

Fluoride and Baby Teeth

Baby teeth are thinner than adult teeth and can decay quickly, so fluoride matters from the time the first teeth appear. We can tell you how much toothpaste is appropriate for your child's age and whether any other fluoride sources, such as water or rinses, are right for your family.

What to Tell Us Before Treatment

Let us know about any allergies, medications or health conditions, and tell us if your child has had fluoride treatment elsewhere. This helps us choose the right product and schedule. If your child swallows a lot of toothpaste or you have questions about the fluoride level in your water, we are glad to talk it through.

Families often ask whether fluoride is still needed once sealants are placed. The answer is yes: sealants protect the chewing surfaces of molars, while fluoride strengthens enamel across the whole tooth, including the sides and between teeth.

Before Your Visit

• Tell us about your child's health history and any allergies.
• Bring a list of any questions about fluoride toothpaste or water.
• Let your child eat beforehand if the visit is long, as you may be asked to wait before eating afterward.

After Your Treatment

• Follow our instructions about when your child can eat and drink afterward.
• Avoid hard or sticky foods for the rest of the day if advised.
• Brush and floss as usual, starting again at bedtime.
• Keep up with regular checkups so we can see how your child's teeth are doing.
